A cost conscious East Kilbride family is in the running to be crowned Britain’s most money savvy, having been shortlisted in the annual Nectar Savvy Family competition. After over 1000 families answered the call to show why their household is the UK’s savviest, the Dingwall family were selected along with six other finalists to keep an online blog, sharing all their best money saving tips.
Mum, Andrea, entered the family, including husband Richard and their three children, Amy (15), Lily (7) and Calvin (2), into the six week, summer competition as he felt their frugal habits would make them worthy of the title. Constantly on the hunt for bargains and offers, they use the coupons and loyalty points they collect on days out for their three kids. Thanks to her dedication to picking up bargains, Andrea is even known by friends as ‘the woman with the vouchers.’
The Dingwall family is posting their money saving advice regularly at www.nectar.com/savvy. Their blog will be reviewed against the other participating families by a panel of judges, including financial expert, Jasmine Birtles, last year’s winning Mum, Hannah Mills, and Nectar Marketing Director, James Frost, in August.
The family with the most unique and useful tips will earn the Nectar Savvy Family title and be rewarded with a recession-busting selection of prizes including:
• Four easyJet flights to any destination
• A Sainsbury's giftcard worth £500
• £500 from BP to spend on fuel
• £500 for the family to spend at Vision Express
• A free week's car hire in Europe courtesy of Hertz
• A year's cover from British Gas on a Home Care policy
• A Nintendo Wii console package courtesy of American Express
• 50,000 Nectar points.
Mum, Andrea, comments: “We’re delighted to be sharing our tips with the nation. As a family we all chip in to make our budget stretch and never, ever miss out on a voucher or a saving. We hope other families reading our blog can see that being careful with money doesn’t have to be boring and can also be quite fun for all involved.”
First established in 2009 in response to the UK's economic downturn, Savvy Family has captured public imagination and established loyal followers with thousands of clever and unusual money-saving hints and tips being shared. Now in its fourth year, the Savvy Family competition has seen a record amount of entries, as families seek out new ways to save money as the recession continues to bite, impacting increasingly on family spending.
James Frost, Marketing Director, Nectar says: “The unprecedented number of entries we received this year highlights how important being money savvy is to British families at the moment. Four years after first launching the competition there is still a real hunger for this type of advice as the family budget continues to be squeezed. Whilst the blogging is a great exercise for the families involved, we can all benefit by taking their tips on board.”
Families who aren’t taking part in Nectar’s Savvy Family blogging competition still have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes by following the competition through the Nectar Facebook page (facebook.com/nectar) and Twitter (@Nectar), when they share their own money saving tips. Reigning Savvy queen, Hannah Mills, will also be revealing some of her ‘saving secrets’ and answering the nation’s budget dilemmas in the very first Savvy Family webchat, to be hosted on the Nectar Facebook page during the competition.
