A New Approach to Homelessness Prevention
North Lanarkshire Council has officially launched NL Reach, a new initiative designed to prevent homelessness before it reaches crisis point. The programme was unveiled at the Watson Street Community Hub in Motherwell and brings together council services, housing partners and community organisations to strengthen early support for vulnerable residents.
NL Reach, which stands for North Lanarkshire Responsive, Empowering, Accessible, Community Hub, aims to ensure people receive the right help at the right time. By identifying early warning signs, staff and local organisations can connect individuals and families with practical support before they lose their homes.
Supporting Scotland’s ‘Ask & Act’ Vision
The programme supports the proposed Housing (Scotland) Bill 2025 and its planned ‘Ask & Act’ duties. These duties encourage public services across Scotland to ask about housing concerns earlier and take action quickly to prevent homelessness.
Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of Housing at North Lanarkshire Council, explained that the focus is on stronger partnership working and ensuring support is accessible when people need it most. He highlighted the importance of listening to residents and responding early to reduce hardship.
One of Only 15 Pilot Projects in Scotland
NL Reach is one of only 15 pilot projects selected across Scotland through the Scottish Government-backed Ask & Act programme, delivered by Advice Direct Scotland. More than 65 applications were submitted nationally, making North Lanarkshire’s selection a significant achievement and the only successful pilot across Lanarkshire.
Scottish Housing Secretary Màiri McAllan welcomed the initiative, stating that preventing homelessness is key to ending it altogether.
Building Stronger Communities
The launch of NL Reach reflects North Lanarkshire Council’s wider commitment to supporting vulnerable residents and building stronger, more resilient communities through early intervention and partnership working.
